I told a rather epic and personal story at our last The Mister Rogers Variety Hour show. The events of this story span no less than the years of my life, as I encountered them, from 1985 to 2020, which I crammed, due to time constraints, into a 14-minute narrative, which I think accounts for the mounting sweat on my upper lip throughout.
This story is about my search to place my queerspawn life story into the right hands and to understand it for myself. It was filmed by Jen Clark.
I hope you’ll give it a watch, or a listen.
A few things to note, which will make sense after the story, or perhaps before:
I did eventually get a diamond. It’s gorgeous.
You can read the book I mention, and I think you might love it: https://demeterpress.org/books/spawning-generations-rants-and-reflections-on-growing-up-with-lgbtq-parents/
The tap water in the Dominican Republic is to be avoided at all costs and is the most insidious when it’s used to wash lettuce or mint at a fancy tourist restaurant because then you really don’t see it coming!
There are about two seconds missing from the video due to a tech issue. In those critical two seconds: “Marie takes my hands into their hands and holds them.”
When Ellen comes out, it looks like this: Watch at 6:30 for the big moment I mention in my story and watch at 4:15 for some of the fantastic lead up. And then just enjoy this archival footage of that treasured night in American TV history.
You can join me and my friends for more live storytelling on October 26th at Von Bar for our next The Mister Rogers Variety Hour.
Great job, Emma! Great substance and great delivery! Very entertaining to watch!
John and I agree with Margie. This is Netflix material and delivery, Emma. Really quite brilliant. Thank you!
